Move to higher grounds – Gmet warms of more rains

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has advised persons in flood-prone areas to vacate their homes and move to higher grounds until the rainy session is over.
This, according to the agency is because the country will experience a few more days of rain before the end of the season.

“It (the rain) has made a lot of places saturated already, so any rain that comes again will be very devastating. So people who know that they are living in flood-prone areas should try and move out, and after the rainy season they can come back because any little rain that will come will be devastating especially for those in low-lying areas,” the Head of Forecasting at the agency, Mr. Tettey Portuphy advised on Accra based radio station, Citi FM.

Saturday’s downpour flooded some parts of Accra and some major roads in the capital.

Last week, part of Kumasi also experienced heavy rains which caused some havoc.

According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), seven persons have lost their lives in the Kumasi floods.

The rain also displaced many including some traders at Kejetia, Atasemanso, and at the Asafo markets respectively.

He said the rains have the potential of wreaking havoc in some communities.

He, therefore, urged Ghanaians to embrace themselves for more heavy rains, “For those of us living along with the coastal areas, we should expect more rains. We are still in June, and so we are not out of the woods yet, so we have to brace ourselves for a few more rains before we get out of it,” he said.
