The national communication officer of the main opposition political party, the National Democratic Congress, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, has claimed that it was the former president John Dramani Mahama, who solely facilitated financial grants for the construction and completion of the national mosque in Ghana.
There is a raging debate on the source of funds ongoing concerning where and how the money was accrued before the mosque was completed because there are those who are kicking against a similar project in the national capital.
Board of trustees had been inaugurated to spearhead the activities leading to the construction and completion of the national cathedral building project initiated by the current president of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa.
The national Chief Imam of the Islamic community in Ghana, through his spokesperson in the person of, Aremeyaw Shaibu, broke their silence on the source of funds for the construction and completion of the national mosque in the national capital of Ghana, Accra, located at Kanda-Kawukudi next to the 37 Military Hospital area.
Some cross-section of Ghanaians alleged recently questioned why some people are protesting against the construction of the national cathedral building project in the national capital citing financial debacles as being the reasons for their revolt because others claimed that, when it was the construction of the national mosque, certain people were silent in the country but when it comes to building a national cathedral for God, people are rising against it saying the country is facing financial difficulties therefore, this is not the most appropriate time for the construction of the national cathedral building project.
It was earlier thought it, tax payers’ money was largely invested in building the national mosque before some Ghanaians are registering their displeasure against the donation from this incumbent president towards the construction of the building which compelled certain individuals to assume that the same taxpayers’ money was hugely invested in the mosque and as such, there is no wrong if the same taxpayers’ money is being used to construct a national cathedral for God but the public relations officer of the national Chief Imam came out and refuted such fallacious claims on the part of some unreliable persons in society.
The national mosque was initiated and completed successfully under the erstwhile administration of the former president John Dramani Mahama, which some concluded that he doled out some parts of state resources to see the project coming to fruition. But in a sharp rebuttal, the national communications officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi, has hinted that the former president John Dramani Mahama was the sole individual as the head of state at the time who facilitated and sourced funds for the construction of the national mosque before it was finally completed as we are seeing it currently being used after its opening at Kanda, Ruga Zongo, where national headquarters of the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO is situated.
The debate would continue to raise many eyebrows over the actual source of funding for the construction of the national mosque so far as many Ghanaians are still lambasted and chastising the government for giving out taxpayers’ money for the building. It has been reported by Ghanaweb that, the construction works ongoing at the site of the national cathedral project, have been ground to a total halt without giving further details.
