The well-known Ghanaian academic and the esteemed politician is blissfully wed to Prof. Goski B. Alabi or Professor Joshua Alabi, a professor of quality management and leadership, and they have two beautiful children as a result.

Prof. Alabi continued his education at the then Institute of Professional Studies and received his Ordinary Level Certificate and Advanced Level Certificate from Tamale Secondary School in Ghana’s Northern Region. He received his Professional Training Qualifying Certificate in Accountancy from this institution in 1980.

Alabi additionally obtained a Master’s Degree in Industrial Economics in 1986 and Master of Science Degree in International Marketing in 1992 from the Russian Economics University (which was then Moscow Institute of National Economy) and Strathclyde University of Glasgow, Scotland respectively.

In the political arena, Alabi previously served as the Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency in Ghana’s Greater-Accra Region for four years (from 1997 to 2001), Northern Regional Minisiter (from 1998 to 2000), Greater-Accra Regional Minisiter (from 1997 to 1998) and Greater-Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for four years (from 2001 to 2005).

In the local and International Leadership arena, Professor Joshua Alabi formerly served as the Chairman of the Ghana Book Development Council (from 2009 to 2017), Chairman of the Board of Directors for the HFC Bank (from 2014 to 2016), Chairman of the African Region of the International Association of University Presidents (from 2011 to 2016) and Chairman of the UNESCO Commission of Ghana (from 2009 to 2014).

The staunch NDC icon additionally served as the Chairman of the Governing Council of Accra Polytechnic (from 2009 to 2014), Chairman for the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (from 2013 to 2016) as well as a Member of the Group of Experts of UNESCO, Paris, France in 2011.

In the academic world, Alabi served as a Senior Lecturer of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Ghana in 2001, and later climbed to the position of a Pro-Rector (from 2005 to 2008), then an Associate Professor in 2008, a Rector (from 2008 to 2012), and finally the Vice-Chancellor of the University (from 2012 to 2016).

Prior to that he served as a Lecturer of the University (from 1987 to 2005), where he was appointed as the Head of the Marketing Department in 1989, and a Dean of the Management Faculty (from 2003 to 2005).

Prof. Alabi initially taught at the Northern School of Business (from 1980 to 1981).

While in the academic environment, Alabi served on a number of committees including the Academic Board Committee, Budget Committee, Planning and Resource Committee, Statuses Committee, Finance Committee and the University’s Governing Council.

He also chaired a number of committees including the Research and Conference Committee, Development Committee, Publications Committee as well as the Library Committee.

In the Sports Environment, Alabi formerly served as a Member of the Ghana Football Association’s Management Board, General Secretary for the Ghana League Clubs Association as well as the Coordinator for the Ghana Black Stars Management Committee from 1994 to 1997.

Current Leadership Roles

Currently, Professor Joshua Alabi is a Fellow of the Ghana Institute of Taxation, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (Ghana), Founder and Board Chairman of the Consumer Advocacy Centre (Ghana), an Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Professional Studies (Accra, Ghana), Affiliate Member of the Consumers International, Member of the Federation of Consumer Organization as well as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Awards Received by Professor Joshua Alabi

1. Mushod Abiola Prize for Excellence in Marketing in 1992 by Strathclyde University of Glasgow, Scotland.

2. 2012 Marketer of the Year Award (Male Category) by the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana.

3. 2012 Ghana’s Most Influential Public Sector Leader of the Year by IMANI Centre for Policy and Education Ghana.

4. 2013 Vice-Chancellor of the Year Award by the All-Africa Students Union

5. 2015 Leadership and Transformation Award by the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana.

6. Officer of the Order of the Volta Honour by former president John Dramani Mahama.

Background Information

Professor Joshua Alabi was born on March 1, 1958 to a Mother who was a trader and a Father who was an Automechanic in Ghana’s Capital, Accra.
